The Amrao Manush Project

The living conditions of the pavement dwellers in Dhaka city are miserable, risky and so they are most vulnerable of the urban poor community. On the other hand, these people indeed provide various essential services to the city dwellers, but they don’t have entitlements to livelihood security, social protection and easy access to social facilities. As estimated, there are between 15,000 to 20,000 pavements dwellers in Dhaka city that are found in ferry landings, train stations, bus stations, market centers, religious shrines, parks and on footpaths. On the basis of above facts and findings Concern Worldwide has taken up a project titled "Amrao Manush" targeting the urban extreme poor, particularly to improve the lives of pavement dwellers. In this respect, the Pavement Dwellers thus are defined as who sleep without a fixed roof overhead, pay but do not pay normal rent to use the place to stay or sleep, have no other place to stay in Dhaka. Project goal: Pavement dwellers will be recognized as citizens of Bangladesh, fully entitled to the rights that other citizens receive. They will also be recognized for the valuable services they provide, and their entitlements to livelihood security and social protection will be realized.
